I had just given four years to a university that sold me a dream, and I couldn’t get any more studio time through the school. So I had to get a job again to pay for music. I felt so trapped and it was supposed to be temporary, but I stayed much longer than I should have.

Before I finished and released the album, I met her—the woman who would change the trajectory of everything I had worked for my whole life. Around that same time, I was in two vicious car accidents. Both cars were totaled, only about three months apart. I felt like the world was crashing down and everything I had built was falling apart.

I went on to marry that girl, and that five-year marriage ended in the deepest betrayal of my life. The two kids I was raising as my own were gone. Again, I lost everything, and this time I was drowning in debt. I had nothing but the dreams I’d been chasing since I was a kid.
